Golden Email #33: Some books

Here are some of my favorite books. The common denominator of them seems to be honesty and uniqueness, and that I've felt something reading them and not that I learned something. Even if more than half of them are non-fiction and my main reason for reading most often is to learn.

Sara Imari Walker - Life as no one knows it
Best part is the creativity and the allowing of crazy ideas going against the mainstream. Many people have thought a lot about their field, some of them have something interesting to say about it, and a few of those have that nerve that makes it something bigger than just transformative knowledge. A sense of art shining through the popular science, and personality and enthusiasm shines through as well. Surprisingly deep for being so easily accessible.

Aristotle - Ethics
Sheer volume of thought (I talk more about it here). Holds up surprisingly well still, his other works may be as well thought-out but this is the only one I’ve read (almost) to the end. All his books are excellent for inspecting how the most brilliant mind thought and reasoned, even if the resulting facts aren’t always correct and up to date. The origin of the precision of science in the west. If you want your intellect to rise, read this, because it is the best and most accurate book by the most impressive philosopher of our history.

Stephen King - On writing
The best and most memorable parts of Stephen King’s book was his personal biased opinions, when he strayed away from reason and just had a feeling about something. Like adverbs and passive verbs suck. The rest of the book is probably more informative, but these parts mean the most. And the part about not letting writing take over life completely, you get inspiration from an actual life, like having to plunge your toilet. And that he hates plot.

Andrea Pirlo - Att spela är att tänka
Flödar naturligt mellan ämnen. Andrea Pirlo tänker ärligt, intressant och vackert oavsett spökskrivare eller ej. Det naturliga flödet mellan ämnen visar sig vara konstruerat - varje kapitel handlar om två saker, som kopplas ihop för att få det att verka random och fritt flödande. Men det gör inget. Bästa språket, just för att Andrea Pirlo är ärlig, och kanske också för att han är italienare.
Handlar inte om fotboll även om det kretsar kring ämnet, vilket gör det bra. Men ibland handlar det också om just fotboll och inget annat, inga metaforer och inget använda fotboll för att säga något större, och det är också det som gör det bra.

Sebastian Mattsson - Kungen av content
Djupdykning i att leva ett liv av konst för konstens skull och inte för uppmärksamhetens skull. Att skapa något fantastiskt och lägga det i sin byrålåda, för att man inte bryr sig om något annat än att just skapa det.

Jessica Jung - Shine & Bright
Two books. Half is standard romance and surface-level entertainment aimed at an audience who wants a specific thing and then gets it by reading these books. Other half is brutally honest, personal and revealing truths about a mystified industry in a way that neither shows it as 100% positive nor 100% negative. This second half is why I like the book, plus it's the best way to learn about how k-pop companies work. You also learn about how girls are when there are nine of them in the same room together all day. I can say, that it's not just sunshine.

Martin Källstrand - Travelmaniac
Korta och roliga berättelser från sinnessjuka och udda upplevelser i _alla_ världens länder. Första boken (andra boken har inte kommit ut än!) handlar om de minst besökta länderna i världen, så här är nog de mest konstiga historierna. Det bästa är när han berättar om typ att han blev arresterad och var med om helt sjuka grejer och korrupta regeringar och sånt, och sedan i slutet av varje kapitel så tipsar han om typ bästa glassbaren i landet, eftersom varje land har en liten faktaruta i slutet av kapitlet. Extremt lärorik och häpnadsväckande men på ett lättsamt sätt. En hyllning till att resa utan att dra för många paralleller till andra saker. Det handlar om att uppleva världen, inget mer.
